My Role

As the lead Product Designer for Whoto Whoto, I spearheaded the design process, encompassing the following key phases:

  • Discovery & Requirements Analysis: Conducted user interviews, competitive analysis, and stakeholder discussions to define user needs, app functionalities, and monetization strategies.
  • Information Architecture & Sketching: Established the app's information flow and interactive design concepts.
  • High-Fidelity Mockup Creation: Developed interactive, polished prototypes for user testing and validation

Understanding the Challenge

The primary challenge was designing an app that seamlessly translates the traditional Whot experience into a digital format, while introducing engaging social and competitive elements. The app needed to:

  • Facilitate Intuitive Gameplay: Ensure a smooth and intuitive user experience for both casual and experienced Whot players.
  • Enable Multiplayer Experience: Provide various modes for players to compete against each other or AI opponents in real-time.
  • Incorporate Monetization: Implement a virtual currency system and in-app purchases to support the app's business model.
  • Maintain Authenticity: Preserve the core elements and social dynamics of the traditional Whot game.

The goal was to create a digital Whot platform that captivates players while seamlessly integrating revenue-generating features.

Research & Define

The design process began with in-depth discussions with the Whoto Whoto team and potential users to gain a comprehensive understanding of the product vision, user needs, and market landscape. Key questions addressed included:

  • Gameplay Mechanics: How do the core Whot game rules and mechanics translate to a digital format?
  • Multiplayer Modes: What modes would provide the most engaging and social experience for players?
  • Monetization Approach: How can the app generate revenue while maintaining an enjoyable user experience?
  • Competitive Elements: What features could be introduced to create a sense of excitement and achievement for players?
  • Branding and Aesthetics: How can the app's visual identity and brand personality resonate with the target audience?

A comparative analysis of similar digital card games and multiplayer platforms was conducted to identify best practices and potential areas for innovation. One of such app was Whot Africa.
